Providing hydraulics within the pressure hull and driving the fairwater and bow planes as a backup to the main steering and diving system is the role of ship's service hydraulics. This system supplies hydraulic power to internal submarine functions and acts as a redundancy for steering and diving operations, ensuring that depth control surfaces can be operated even if the primary system is unavailable. In normal use, the steering and diving hydraulics handle those controls, while external hydraulics power equipment mounted outside the hull and cargo handling hydraulics manage deck and cargo operations.
